Work Continues to Prep Roadway for Reconstruction in 2010
Shoulder reconstruction and construction of crossovers continue on I-476/Blue Route in Montgomery County as crews prepare the work area for reconstruction of the southbound side of the interstate between I-76 and the Turnpike’s Mid-County Interchange in 2010.
Working primarily at night through the end of the year, workers are building a northern crossover – where a single southbound “express” lane will shift to the northbound side of the interstate -- just south of the Turnpike interchange.
A second crossover, which will return that “express” lane to the southbound side, is under construction in the median just south of the I-76 (Schuylkill Expressway) Interchange.
Under this preparatory phase of the I-476 roadway project, crews also are rebuilding the northbound shoulders to strengthen them to bear the weight of traffic. During construction in 2010, northbound traffic will be shifted to the far right onto the shoulder area to provide room for a single southbound “express” lane, which will travel on the inside shoulder area on the northbound side.
The inside southbound shoulder also is being reinforced in order to carry a lane of southbound traffic, which will be shifted to the left during reconstruction of the outside half of the southbound interstate.
Lane closures may occur in the overnight hours through the end of the year. Full capacity will be restored each weekday by the start of the morning rush and will be maintained through the p.m. rush.
Reconstruction of the southbound side of I-476 will be coordinated with reconstruction of the southbound bridge over the Schuylkill River.
