Completed Improvements

12/15/2009 I-476 Roadway Status: 12.15.09

Construction crews continue to build crossovers and rebuild the shoulders of I-476/Blue Route north- and southbound in preparation for large-scale reconstruction of the southbound side of the interstate between I-76 and the Turnpike’s Mid-County Interchange in 2010.

A northern crossover is under construction in the median south of the Turnpike Interchange. The southern crossover is being built just south of the I-76 Interchange. The crossovers will be utilized to shift a single southbound “express” lane to the northbound side and back again during 2010 construction.

The shoulders within the work zone on both sides of the interstate are being rebuilt as well to carry traffic that will be shifted to the edges of the highway during certain stages of reconstruction in 2010 and 2011. Work is currently underway in the southbound shoulder to fill sink holes in advance of shoulder reconstruction.

During construction in 2010, three lanes of northbound traffic will be shifted to the far right onto the shoulder area to provide room for a single southbound “express” lane, which will travel on the inside shoulder area on the northbound side.

The southbound shoulders also are being reinforced in order to carry a lane of southbound traffic, which will be shifted to the left during reconstruction of the outside half of the southbound interstate.

Lane closures may occur in the overnight hours until the start of the year-end holiday period. No construction-related lane restrictions are planned -- though crews will work in the median and shoulders -- on the project from Dec. 24 through Jan. 3. Work will resume on Jan. 4 to complete preparations
