Preparations continue southbound bridge construction
Three lanes of the northbound I-476 bridge traffic has been shifted to the right, and concrete barrier has been set along the outside edge of the northbound left lane to create a southbound “express" lane on the rehabilitated northbound bridge.
A single lane of southbound traffic has been shifted onto the "express" lane. With the "express" lane in place, two additional lanes of southbound traffic remain on the southbound side of the structure.
Crews are now working to set concrete barrier in the center of the southbound bridge. Once the barrier is secured to the bridge deck, work will begin to remove the upstream half of the bridge's deck and its outside parapets. The exposed deck components will then be cleaned and refurbished in the first stage of the project to rehabilitate the bridge's superstructure and replace the concrete riding surface and parapets.
Construction on the southbound bridge will be coordinated with a separate project to reconstruct the I-476/Blue Route Roadway beginning in early 2010. Go here for a status report on the roadway project.
